||
Een verblijf in Schotland is niet compleet zonder een bezoek aan de hoofdstad: Glasgow. Het is extra leuk om de stad met collega’s te bezoeken en helemaal als het een internationaal gezelschap betreft. Met acht personenen vertegenwoordigden we maar liefst zeven nationaliteiten: Schots, Frans, Italiaans, Spaans, Japans, Libanees en natuurlijk Nederlands.

Sommigen vertrokken al op vrijdagavond, anderen op zaterdag laat in de middag en ik besloot om zaterdagochtend op pad te gaan. Dat gaf me mooi de tijd en daglicht om een [Walking Tour][1] uit te proberen. Hoewel de instructies te wensen overlieten heb ik toch een aantal bezienswaardigheden gezien. Het was veelal te donker om fantastische foto’s te maken, dus ik beloof nog eens terug te komen!

Na het ophalen van een deel van de groep bij de bus en de rest bij het hostel was het <del>etenstijd</del> biertijd. Het Merchant Square is daarvoor een ideale bestemming: talloze eet en drinkgelegenheden dicht bij elkaar bieden een uitgebreide keuze.

<span style="line-height: 1.5;">Het </span><a style="line-height: 1.5;" href="http://www.beercafe.co.uk/">Beer Cafe</a><span style="line-height: 1.5;"> schenkt bieren uit alle uithoeken van de wereld en het door de Japanse postdoc aangeraden “Kirin Ichiban” was een aangename verassing. Ook het daaropvolgende diner bij het Italiaanse </span><a style="line-height: 1.5;" href="http://www.fanellisglasgow.com/">Fanelli’s</a><span style="line-height: 1.5;"> was om de vingers bij af te likken.</span>

Op zoek naar een geschikte lokatie om de avond al bierend te vervolgen belanden we bij <a href="http://www.thecorinthianclub.co.uk/">The Corinthian</a>. Deze “tent” met bijbehorend casino was iets te deftig voor ons, maar het was spectaculair om even binnen gekeken te hebben.

<span style="line-height: 1.5;">Uiteindelijk belandden we bij </span><a style="line-height: 1.5;" href="http://www.garageglasgow.co.uk/">The Garage</a><span style="line-height: 1.5;">: een nachtclub waar ik normaal niet snel (en ook niet langzaam) naar binnen zou gaan. Eenmaal binnen bleek het nogal mee te vallen, helemaal omdat er Heineken werd geserveerd! Na een vermakelijke avond keerden we uitgeput terug naar het hostel.</span>
|
||

||

||

||
De zondag hebben we besteed met het verkennen van het uitgebreide winkelgebied. Onze favoriet (we hebben er zeker een uur rondgekeken) was de de Lego Store, een aanrader! Met het laatste daglicht keerden we terug richting St Andrews zodat we gedurende de bijna 3 uur durende busreis nog even van de mooie omgeving konden genieten.
